Abstract

Critical comparison of the theories of Johnson (1977) and Biot (1965), of incipient buckling of an embedded layer in rubberlike materials, shows them to be formally identical, in spite of claims to the contrary. A more direct method of obtaining the same results is also given below. Biot's method has the advantages of 1. (a) clearly distinguishing between a material response and the effect of an initial stress field (uniform shortening before buckling commences) and therefore. 2. (b) being easily adaptable to an anisotropic material response.
