Abstract

AbstractBuckling of a simple supported and cantilever nano‐rod and under action of self‐weight was modeled, taking into account the surface effect according to two models of surface elasticity – Gurtin–Murdoch and Steigmann–Ogden. The size effect under the buckling was studied by the Ritz method using two kinematic hypotheses, known as the rod theories of Euler–Bernoulli and Timoshenko. The simulation results were compared depending on the accepted surface elasticity model and the kinematic hypothesis.
