Abstract

This paper gives the design and implementation of closed loop Buck/Boost converter for automobiles. This model operates in either charging or discharging mode. Both modes of operation are not possible at same time. Hence it forms a unidirectional adapter for the Buck/Boost converter. In charging mode it gives supply to the battery as 13.6V DC and in discharging mode it gives supply to the load as 230V/50HZ output. In charging mode the battery in any appliances to be charged and in discharging mode any value of load is connected in output. Charging mode having the blocks of AC-DC rectifier followed by a (DC-DC) buck converter. Discharging mode having the blocks of DC-DC boost converter followed by a DC-AC inverter. Excellent output waveform is obtained by this unidirectional adapter. During boost converter mode, high frequency operation is carried to convert the battery voltage into a high DC voltage. Hence all the semiconductor switches in boost converter mode is to be operated in Zero Voltage Transition (ZVT) and Zero Current Transition (ZCT). Due to this there is no voltage stress across the semiconductor devices. Therefore, overall efficiency of the adapter is increased. The closed loop of the converter is formed by PID controller. It gives the constant 230V output from boost converter for any values of load. This adapter is simple in construction and control the output is easy due to less components.
