Abstract

Though the use of magnetic bubble memories for data storage had been thought of more than two decades ago, they have not become popular in computer systems. Main reasons for this are the then existing stiff competition from traditional magnetic data storage media and the slow rate of progress in the bubble device technology compared to that of other mass storage devices. Nevertheless the inherent advantages of bubble memory over the non-volatile memories have held designer's interest. Bubble memory devices find applications in hostile environments in particular, where mechanical storage devices cannot be used.
