Abstract

An investigation into how the presence of a circular cylinder disturbs a buoyancy-driven homogeneous bubble-swarm using a novel two-phase particle-image velocimetry is presented. Depending on the void fraction and ratio of bubble size to cylinder diameter, two regimes of bubble distribution in the cylinder wake are classified and corresponding mechanisms are explained. Also, the liquid-phase flow forms an interesting two-phase wake behind a cylinder. To analyze this, a novel model for bubble-induced agitation (Reynolds stress) that agrees well with the measurements is suggested.
