Abstract

In this paper, a new hybrid bank-to-turn (BTT) / skid to-turn (STT) control system is designed for small diameter bomb (SDB). After modeling BTT flight control for SDB, and developing the BTT autopilot structure, this paper puts forward a hybrid BTT/STT control mode, in order to avoid the violent shift of bank angle, which often takes place when SDB is operating in low commanded accelerations and full BTT control mode. The major characteristic of this new design is the combination between BTT mode and STT mode, in which the latter can make up the weakness of the former. Then the hybrid BTT/STT autopilot command logic is used to convert the commanded accelerations from the guidance commands to reference angle commands for the autopilot. Lastly, the hybrid BTT/STT autopilot design is evaluated with a detailed six degrees-of-freedom (6DOF) simulation. Compared with full BTT control mode, the results show that the new controllers achieve excellent tracking performance, which can afford reference to the further application.
