Abstract

A discussion is given of the properties of the shell model effective potential obtained from Brueckner theory. Correction terms to the simple picture, in which the effective potential is just the Brueckner t matrix, are indicated explicitly for certain cases and their origin discussed. Analogy with known properties of the t matrix for infinite nuclear matter suggests that some of these corrections are of importance. It is suggested that while there may be some meaning to the concept of a simple effective potential in certain situations, the idea is not of general applicability.
