Abstract

In a survey, carried out in 1966/67, of the brucellosis in the dairy-farming community and allied workers of Worcestershire, the personnel of a hundred farms where the milk was known to be infected with Brucella abortus and a hundred known to be free from infection, and veterinarians, slaughtermen, meat inspectors, and artificial inseminators were interviewed and blood-samples taken. A control group of doctors and civil servants who had not had any association with dairy farms nor had drunk untreated milk during the past six years was included. 1297 persons were interviewed and 1052 sera examined. Only 2 cases of acute brucellosis were found. 16 people had had the disease in the past but only 4 of these complained of symptoms at the time of examination. A considerable amount of subclinical (latent) infection among the personnel of the infected farms and the veterinarians and a lesser amount among the other groups was found. Arthritis and " rheumatism " was seen frequently among the dairy farmers. It was not found to be due to brucellosis.
