Abstract
AMONG the cardinal symptoms of respiratory disease, hemoptysis is, if not the most frequent, at least the most frightening experience and constitutes a stern warning for both patient and doctor. Years ago it was considered a certain sign of tuberculosis, especially in young people; it was recognized later as a possible sign of pulmonary cancer if the subject was relatively advanced in years. However, in a good many cases hemoptysis occurs without any apparent explanation.
