Abstract

The first case of sarcoidosis diagnosed by bronchoscopic biopsy of the .bronchial mucosa was reported by Benedict and Castleman in 1941 (1). Since that time, and especially in the last ten years, there has been growing appreciation of the bronchial changes associated with sarcoidosis and recognition of the importance of bronchial mucosal biopsy as a source of histologic diagnosis (2-15). Since 1950, bronchoscopy as a diagnostic technique has been used by the writers in patients suspected of having sarcoidosis. Bronchial mucosal .biopsy has been performed in many of these patients. The following report is a review of this experience with bronchoscopy and bronchial mucosal biopsy during a 16year period from January 1, 1950 through December 31, 1965.'
