Abstract

M echanical obstruction of the bronchi and bronchioles by mucus and mucopurulent casts may be a cause of progressive ventilatory insufficiency or status asthmaticus. In 1952 Tausig, Papper, and Barach reported their experience with ether anesthesia in the treatment of status asthmaticus refractory to the other measures [3]. Recently, Thompson and Pryor [4] reported their results with bronchial lavage for the treatment of obstructive lung disease. This series of 37 patients presents the results of bronchoscopy with lavage under ether anesthesia in a variety of patients with chronic and acute ventilatory insufficiency unresponsive to other therapy.
