Abstract

This case is of a nine year old colored child. On admisson the diagnosis of gangrenous appendix with perforation was made. He was operated upon immediately. His postoperative course was one of infection with elevation of temperature and severe secondary anemia. On the twenty-eighth postoperative day the patient developed a temperature of 105°?. with coughing, vomiting and spitting a purulent, bloody material. X-ray examination revealed consolidation of the base of right lung. Skiodan was injected into the appendiceal fistula and x-ray revealed a sinus extending through the diaphragm into the bronchus. The patient was discharged with the bronchocolic fistula still draining. Nine months later the patient had apparently recovered except for a slight cough. Two years later the child is reported to be completely normal.
