Abstract

Bronchiolitis is the most common lower respiratory tract infection in infants, the leading cause of hospital admission in young children and the most frequent cause of respiratory failure in children admitted to paediatric intensive care units in the UK. Due to the seasonal pattern of this illness, GPs are likely to see many infants presenting with bronchiolitis during the winter. GPs need to be aware of how to assess and manage infants with bronchiolitis and know when to refer them to the paediatrician.
