Abstract

A study was made to determine the inorganic bromide content in methyl bromide-fumigated hay bales. Bales were, fumigated with methyl bromide to kill the cereal leaf beetle, Oulema melanopus (L.), in accordance with recommended treatment schedules to comply with quarantine regulations in Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Mary]and, Michigan, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Virginia, and West Virginia. The total bromide in the treated baks ranged from less than 2.0 to 34.0 ppm which was less than the established 50 ppm tolerance. Untreated bales showed a natural bromide content of 2.0-20.0 ppm. Test results showed that the bromide content associated with hay fumigations decreased as the commodity temperature was lowered.
