Abstract
Single and multiple oral doses of bromfenac sodium were evaluated under double-blind, parallel conditions in patients with moderate to severe pain after major abdominal or orthopedic surgery. Two hundred eighteen inpatients received an initial dose of oral bromfenac (25 or 50 mg), oral naproxen sodium (550 mg), intramuscular ketorolac (30 mg), or placebo. Patients in the 7-day multiple-dose section received bromfenac (25 or 50 mg) or naproxen sodium (275 mg). Oral doses of bromfenac provided analgesia equal to that provided by intramuscular ketorolac or by naproxen sodium. Bromfenac 50 mg maintained its effect longer than the other treatments despite its shorter half-life (1 to 3 hours). There were no clinically important differences between the active analgesics and placebo in terms of tolerance.
