Abstract

An examination of the periodontal region of incisors and premolars in sheep of various ages on 3 farms with and 2 without broken mouth showed the presence of a plaque-related mild local chronic gingivitis in most animals. Only on farms with broken mouth did this progress to a diffuse severe periodontitis with associated collagen fibre loss and pocket production. The probable significance of these findings for tooth support is discussed and a comparison made with chronic inflammatory periodontal disease in man.
