Abstract
Quantum chromodynamics with permanently confined colored quarks and gluons is a remarkably successful theoretical scheme. It is quite possible that the use of such hidden degrees of freedom is — for all practical purposes — unavoidable like, for example, the use of complex numbers in quantum mechanics. Nevertheless, alternative approaches in which the quark degrees of freedom have a more direct physical interpretation should also be pursued.
