Abstract

Broadening our sight on inclusion at work and the role of inclusive leadership, this symposium encompasses a systematic review of the inclusive leadership literature (Veli, Schalk, Knappert, & van Engen), a quantitative (Chung, Shore, Wiegand, & Xu) and a qualitative (Carrero & Härtel) empirical study that examine leaders and their role in supporting inclusion, a contribution on the development of the construct of individuals’ ‘inclusion competence’ (Festing & Kraus), as well as a qualitative exploration of the collective dimension of inclusive leadership (Taksa & Powell). The diversity of the papers and the symposium discussant Lisa Nishii will help participants and the audience to think “outside the box” by unpacking the different layers that scholars have envisioned in the constructs of inclusion and inclusive leadership. Orchestrated as such, we intend our symposium to “broaden our sight” (AoM conference theme 2020) on “understanding inclusive workplaces” (AoM conference theme 2019) and hence, to move the field forward, while speaking to a large AoM audience.
