Abstract

The article discusses the development of cable television, examines the cable market influence on wireless technology, and the introduction of the Multichannel Multipoint Distribution System frequencies by the FCC. In areas where CATV was well entrenched in the viewing market, MMDS services did not fare so well. However, in more sparsely populated areas, MMDS was received with moderate success. In areas where cable TV was well established, with many channels and services, cable plants continued to dominate as the infrastructure of choice for TV programming. While this was taking place satellite TV was being introduced to the viewing market. The channels and services promised by satellite TV were also beginning to eat into the TV household market. In some cases satellite TV services offer upwards of 200 channels.
