Landi Degl'Innocenti, M. ; Calamai, G. ; Landi Degl'Innocenti, E. ; Patriarchi, P. Abstract Magnetic intensification is proposed as a mechanism to explain the general features of the variable broad-band linear polarization emerging from rotating magnetic stars. This mechanism is studied in detail, and some efforts are made to investigate the wide variety of polarization diagrams that can result from it. Theoretical results are compared with direct observations of the variable magnetic star 53 Cam to determine its geometric and magnetic configuration.
