Abstract

The main issue during reservoir characterization in the fractured basement reservoir is to identify the fracture density area as main porosity and permeability system. Delineation of the fracture area based on elastic properties through brittleness average estimation had been done and successfully applied in the unconventional reservoir such as shale gas and coal bed methane. However, the brittleness estimation in the fractured basement reservoir based on seismic data is still rarely to be reported. This paper discusses the feasibility of fracture density detection through brittleness estimation for fractured basement reservoir case. The data set from Malay basin field had been used in this feasibility study. The brittleness average was calculated from elastic properties on well log data had been compared with fracture density log from FMI log. There is some significant correlation between locations of high fracture density with high value of brittleness. The implementation from the estimation of brittleness on seismic data through inversion result shows that the main faults were located in the high brittleness area. The upper part of the basement reservoir has high brittleness value; this area can be predicted to be associated with the weathering formation in the basement and it is confirmed with well log data.
