Abstract
The phenomenon of brittle crack propagation in gas filled pipelines which results in sinusoidal crack paths was investigated by means of laboratory tests on thin walled uPVC pipe. Measurements of true crack tip speed and pressure distribution inside the fracturing pipe combined with high speed photographic records of crack propagation have enabled a greater understanding of the mechanism which causes this type of cracking to be obtained.
