Abstract

Xerostomia (dry mouth) is a common condition with significant morbidity for sufferers. Lack of saliva results in difficulty with eating, talking and taste, and oral discomfort. It also predisposes to dental caries and oral infection with Candida. This study utilised data from a questionnaire-based survey of 202 general medical practitioners (GPs) to indicate the prevalence of this complaint and the practitioners' knowledge of it. Analysis indicates that although the condition is a common complaint, many GPs were unaware of aetiological factors and treatment options available. There appears to be a need for wider dissemination of appropriate management strategies amongst GPs.
