Abstract

The Institute of Oceanography of the University of British Columbia has been studying the oceanography of the inlets of the British Columbia coast since 1951. Temperature, salinity, and oxygen content are determined by routine methods on board ship. Internal waves have been studied with bathythermographs in deeper water, and with a resistance thermometer near the surface. Vertical current profiles have been measured with CBI drags and Ekman meters, while surface currents have been recorded by photographing dye patches. The possibilities of identifying water masses by plankton distribution or by ionic ratios are also being investigated
