Abstract

Shimon Ullman is the Samy and Ruth Cohn Professor of Computer Science and Head of the Department of Applied Mathematics and Computer Science at the Weizmann Institute of Science. He is concurrently a professor in the Department of Brain and Cognitive Sciences at MIT. He obtained his Ph.D. in electrical engineering and computer sciences at MIT in 1977 and has been continuously appointed at MIT since that time. He is extensively involved with the research and professional community. His major research interests are visual perception, brain modeling, cognitive science, and artificial intelligence. His books includeThe Interpretation of Visual Motion(MIT Press, 1977) and (edited with W. Richards)Image Understanding(Ablex, 1989). Johan Wagemans is an associate professor in the Department of Psychology, University of Leuven, Belgium. His primary research interests are visual perception, particularly perceptual organization (symmetry, grouping) and shape perception (invariances). He also has broad interests in cognitive science and artificial intelligence. He has recently completed an important overview chapter “Invariance in perceptual organization and object recognition” (inVision, edited by R. J. Watt, University College/MIT Press, 1997).
