Abstract

This paper suggests that laboratory experimentation is an important vehicle for cultivating reflective practice in all professions, including those based on the social sciences. System dynamics modelling, although originally conceived as a tool for research, is a powerful tool for experimentation with relationships and can be used with advantage to design curricula incorporating laboratory practice for the social sciences. A course in systems modelling incorporating practicum may serve as a reflective complement of an existing curriculum; a course in a specific problem area facilitated by user-friendly modelling software allowing experimentation with the premises of controversial theories may greatly facilitate learning. An attempt is made to delineate formats for such teaching. Two tentative designs for laboratory teaching of systems modelling and a specific problem area are discussed.
