Abstract

This special issue of IEEE Signal Processing Magazine is an attempt to renew the dialogue between these two communities. This issue contains articles that highlight the application of signal processing methods to geophysical problems. Geophysics is an entire interdisciplinary science that nurtures itself from the field of geology, mathematics, and physics. For years, special emphasis has been paid to geophysical data acquisition and data processing, as these two key aspects are an integral part of our efforts to estimate earth models and to monitor processes that occur deep within Earth's interior. At the core of acquisition and processing techniques is the problem of estimating models in the presence of noise and methods that permit us to assimilate and process large multidimensional data structures that depend on space and time.
