Abstract

AEDC is known as a world class aerospace flight simulation test facility and we continue to seek innovative ground testing methods to thrust the Center into the next century. One such method that AEDC is pursuing consists of integrating test and evaluation facilities together. By networking independent simulation sites, multiple hardware and software subsystems could be linked together to simulate a realistic flight test scenario; hence, “Virtual Fight Testing (VFT).” The concept of VFT is intended to provide organizations an enhanced test methodology to verify, validate, and accredit (VV&A) integrated hardware and software systems in a simulated flight environment prior to live flight tests. VFT is not a substitute for actual flight testing, but rather a bridge between ground testing and flight testing to reduce flight test risks. The fidelity levels of VFT are reviewed and the required technologies to achieve each level are discussed. The feasibility of a virtual flight test with an air-to-air tactical missile is determined as plausible and vely beneficial. Moreover, virtual flight tests enable flight tests to be conducted more safely and with a greater confidence i n the system. J
