Abstract

Nurses have a professional obligation to support students in developing competencies that are required for safe, ethical and effective clinical practice (CNO, 2009). Precepting has a long history in various occupations, including nursing. A preceptor acts in a supportive role to ensure patient safety, and facilitate a positive learning environment that encourages professional growth and high-quality patient care (CNO, 2009). In turn, they serve to bridge the gap between theoretical nursing knowledge and clinical practice (Gibson & Hauri, 2000).
