Abstract

Is interdisciplinary research born or made? Governments, companies, and even a few enlightened universities have tried to crossbreed disciplines. They build institutes, make signs with long titles to put over the door, appoint prestigious directors, and sit back to watch their scientific children grow and produce. Bureaucrats reshuffle their funding and management boxes. Meanwhile, scientists happily relabel their work to fit the new funding and institutional categories. Interdisciplinary research ostensibly is fostered; everybody is happy.
