Abstract

Research is reported which investigated current inspection practices and proposed an efficient bridge inspection strategy. For the purpose of predicting the sufficiency rating of bridges, a methodology was developed to obtain statstical regression equations based on Florida Department of Transportation bridge inspection records. The methodology identifies the objective variables that should be considered in the regression and hence removes any subjective judgment. The methodology is presented in a matrix format using 3 methods of obtaining a prediction equation through statistical regression. Based on the prediction equation, this study proposes an inspection strategy that deviates from the current 2-year inspection interval. The inspection strategy was simulated for a 6-year period using the classification subgrouping factorial model.
