Abstract

An elastic-plastic model was used to predict the crack lengths and their growth rate and the fatigue lifetime of notched specimen. The model is based on experimental short and long crack growth results from un-notched specimens the distribution of strain ahead of the notch root. Different notch shape and geometry was tested in this investigation. A comparison was made between predicted and experimental data and good agreement was found between the model and experimental data. The effects of the root radius, notch plastic zone size and notch shape on the crack growth rate have been investigated and discussed.
