Abstract
Bride kidnapping or 'Ala Kachuu’ is an abhorrent custom repressing the lives of women in Kyrgyzstan. Men kidnap women whom they wish to be their future wives, such is done without their consent. Even though it is treated as a custom, this bride kidnapping custom or tradition has no known roots in the traditions and customs of the Kyrgyz people. Laws have been made, reports submitted, investigations done but much is still the same. Kyrgyzstan is a party to the Convention on Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination against Women (CEDAW).
