Abstract
„Civic engagement“ is one of the main topics in the current political and scientific debate in Germany. However, the numerous declarations and publications confuse rather than contribute to the clarification of the various contexts, in which civic engagement is discussed. This paper tries to clarify the current debate and to point out fundamental contradictions and lacunas. For this purpose, five basic questions are analysed: (1) How can we explain the major success of this topic in the social and political debate? (2) What is the theoretical framework of the discussion? (3) Which forms of civic engagement exist? (4) What results has the empirical research furnished? (5) Which prognoses can be deduced from the current debate for the future development of civic engagement in Germany?
