Abstract

Marriage, which is one of the main turning points of individuals lives; it is an important social institution in terms of uniting the lives of men and women and establishing family and kinship ties. Individual behaviors seen with modernization, when the marriage is examined in the axis of marriage, women-men relations, it is seen that the qulities of these differ from the pre-modern period. Transformations in marriage and individualism reflect analysis of the nature of modernity. Emotional closeness, individualism and independence are seen as a basis for young people to establish marriage relationships on the basis of romantic love. Marriage has ceased to be an intersection of economic relations and an environment of intimate relationship, and has reached a level where individualism, romantic love, personal desire ad pleasure are rising. Considering the result of modernity, is the area of the family and marriage changed, if so, how did this happen? The study was shaped by the desire to answer this main research question. In this context, the individualization approach, which is among the concepts related to the subject, has been explained, emphasis has been given to the changing family structure with individualization and finally, the effect of individualization on the family has been mentioned. Thus,a theoretical framework was drawn and the information obtained by making use of the literature was interpreted.
