Abstract

Subject Brexit vote's impact on the Middle East. Significance The United Kingdom's intention to exit the EU, the government's stated policy in the aftermath of the June 23 referendum, has wide ranging impacts for the Middle East. Trade and investment flows are already being influenced by market volatility and the depreciation of sterling. The vote has also raised questions over European policy towards the Middle East, which the United Kingdom has played a key role in shaping. Impacts The weakening of UK global influence could damage conflict-mitigation and human rights advocacy efforts in the region. Disenchantment with the EU model could reduce the appeal of deeper integration in the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) bloc. A slower pace of US interest rates rises due to Brexit-related market volatility is good for Middle East countries with pegged-currencies.
