Abstract

Diffractive dissociation is described as a process where virtual quanta are released from a strong field. The bremsstrahlung spectrum of these quanta leads to the 1/ M 2- dependence of the cross section - as observed for pp-interaction - and the same dependence for proton-nucleus interactions. Confinement of the field quanta (quarks or gluons) explains the general properties of the multiparticle final state into which the excited state of mass M dissociates.
