Abstract

The breeding success parameters of two colonies of great egrets were measured. The egrets in Mexico and New Jersey had similar clutch sizes. The Mexican birds suffered a greater amount of egg mortality while the New Jersey birds suffered greater chick mortality. Circumstantial evidence indicated that pr?dation was the major cause of chick mortality in New Jersey. Growth rates were the same for the two colonies and did not differ as a function of chick hatch order.
