Abstract
Fruit quality is the key to a competitive edge in the plum sector and today's breeding objectives are focused on appearance and flavour traits capable of meeting market demands. Bologna University's CMVF breeding programme at the Dept. of Fruit Tree and Woody Plant Sciences, DCA, includes both European and Japanese plums. Of the former type Sugar Top (high content of soluble solids) has been released and of the latter Japanese type the cultivars 'Black Glow' and 'Black Sunrise' (CG), both featuring brown-black skin, large size and early ripening. Our objectives for new genotype selections of prune for processing include extending seasonality, upgrading quality traits like size, flesh firmness and flavour and for Japanese plum, upgrading fertility, diversifying fruit traits like shape and skin and flesh colour, resistance to handling and to phytoplasma, and improving shelf-life and flavour traits. Sanitary indexing, especially for leptonecrosis, is also being carried out. The best American and European genotypes, as well as myrobalan in the first generation, are being used for adding cold hardiness and high fertility traits. There are now several very promising American-Japanese selections in advanced selection, derived mainly from 'Autumn Giant', 'Black Amber', 'Fortune', 'Larry Ann' and 'TC Sun'.
