Abstract

Bredia (Melastomataceae), comprising 15~30 species, is an endemic genus to Asia. Four taxa were previously recorded in the 2nd edition of the Flora of Taiwan. One additional species, B. quadrangularis Cogn., was found in Laisheshan, Pingtung, southern Taiwan. Morphological characters are described and illustrated from fresh material, and its habitat, flowering and fruiting seasons, and a key to the species are given. Bredia quadrangularis is distinguished from the 4 other Bredia species of Taiwan by its basal venation.
