Abstract
Summary The intenity of the stethoscopic inspiratory breath sounds and regional ventilation were compared in 47 patients with pulmonary emphysema. Two observers used a four grade scale for recording the breath sounds. Weak or absent breath sounds were found to be accompanied by poor ventilation. There was remarkably good agreement between observers.
