Abstract

Nano-sized patterns of condensed water droplets—breath figures—are used as a template to produce arrays of hollow silica half-nanospheres. In article 1500078, P. M. Beaujuge and co-workers describe how the selective hydrolysis of a silica precursor at the air/water droplet interface can be used to produce a thin shell of oxide that traps the water droplets. Removing the water contents by evaporation in vacuo yields tunable arrays of half-nanospheres. The authors acknowledge Ivan D. Gromicho, Scientific Illustrator at KAUST, for the design and development of the front cover image.
