Abstract
During the 1990s, the Scottish Office set breastfeeding targets and issued guidance to health providers on promotion and support for breastfeeding, and the Baby Friendly Initiative. By 2000, 80% of health boards in Scotland had a breastfeeding strategy, and 67% of respondents reported breastfeeding targets in place. Nearly all maternity units (94%) were providing training on breastfeeding for midwives and 88% were participating in the Baby Friendly Initiative, with 6 units (18%) having achieved UK Baby Friendly status. The Scottish breastfeeding rate at 6 or 7 days increased by 2.5% between 1995 and 1999. Less than a third of this increase can be accounted for by the increased age at which women are giving birth.
