Abstract
Background: The Surgeon General, AAP, and WHO are all encouraging increases in the exclusive use of breast milk for at least 6 months through direct breastfeeding. The Surgeon General underscores the specific need to empower the medical community to support breastfeeding mothers through education, encouragement, and professional assistance. There is scant literature on the rates of breast milk provision for infants with medical conditions other than very low birth weight and prematurity.
