Abstract
This article discusses some of the cultural and ethical issues with regard to co-sleeping in the promotion of breastfeeding and the prevention of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS), in the light of current evidence, within present UK culture. It explores the issue of ‘informed choice’ for parents, with particular regard to working within the UNICEF UK Baby Friendly Initiative best practice standards in the UK. A description of the work, within a local area, to establish evidence-based guidelines following heightened awareness of the conflict between two important health promotion issues. The conclusion reflects on the health promotion initiative, the effect it has already achieved and is likely to achieve in the long term, and how it is likely to be evaluated.
