Abstract
Sub-Saharan Africa, with about 10% of the world's population, accounts for nearly 70% of the global burden of HIV infection.1 Women in the region, especially young women, carry more than their share of that burden. In 2020, adolescent girls and young women (aged 15–24 years) accounted for 10% of the population, but 25% of HIV infections. In addition, although African countries have lower incidence rates of breast cancer than European and North American countries do, they have disproportionately high breast cancer mortality rates.
