Abstract

Breast cancer screening by single oblique-view mammography was introduced in Gävleborg county, Sweden in 1974. The total population of the county is 300,000, of which the 74,000 people 40 years old and over were invited to take part in screening. The optimal screening interval for this method should probably be on average 2 years. For various practical reasons, it was not possible to adhere to this interval. In two boroughs, the interval was nearly 5 years between the first and the second screening. For this reason, in the present study, an upper time limit for follow-up cases was set at 3 years.
