Abstract

The use of an air source heat pump storage system in a cold and snowy area in Japan has so far been considered difficult because of its deteriorating performance or frosting due to low temperatures. Recently the system was introduced the Aomori branch office of the Tohoku Electrical Construction Company and surveys on its operating conditions and economical efficiency were conducted in the winter of 1987 and the summer of 1988. This medium-sized office building is located in Aomori, the cold and snowy northernmost city within the service area of the Tohoku Electric Power Company. The surveys revealed that the system is feasible both technically and economically for use in cold and snowy areas, and the northern limit of its use has been extended by 270 km. This paper describes the technical characteristics, operating results and economical efficiency of the system being used in the building.
