Abstract

This chapter turns from a focus on macro-level trends of candidate recruitment and selection over time to an in-depth analysis of the candidate selection process within the Scottish Labour Party. As highlighted in the previous chapter, Scottish Labour has consistently maintained a strong gender balance in its parliamentary group. The party has had two female leaders — former MSP Wendy Alexander and current leader and MSP Johann Lamont.1 And, as of 2012, nearly half of the party’s Shadow Cabinet and Scottish Executive Committee are women (Scottish Labour Party, 2012).
