Abstract

Breaking Bad for Boomers, analyzes the pitfalls of pie-chart plans for retirement asset allocation, identifies new benchmarks for 401(k) plan participants, and offers a new solution for asset allocation marketed by Compass Investors under the name HORIZON, which features back-tested performance for the 40 different 401(k) plans it currently serves with an average AAR of 12% since 1997. The paper ends with the author's actual performance during the downturns between 2008 and 2012 as a subscriber to the HORIZON service, using his Fidelity 401(k) as an example of the success of what Compass calls Adaptive Asset Allocation.
